“Do you sometimes just want to compare two things and not need a lengthy explanation of either? Diffen offers the simple goal of entering two terms and instantly receiving the similarities and differences in a table format. View simple definitions under the information table. Need more information? Wikipedia style entries of information area also available on the page. There is a Top 5 list. At the time of this review, the Top 5 included “Gross vs. Net,” “Affected vs. Effected,” “Meiosis vs. Mitosis,” “DNA vs. RNA,” and “Fruit vs. Vegetable. While not ALL topics are included, the variety is impressive. You can add your own comparison of terms to the list. You may want to discuss with your class the fact that the information here is only as reliable as the people who submitted it, and ask them whether they agree with the comparisons you find here. NOTE: If you explore some of the ready-mades or requested topics, there are some topics "compared" that are not school oriented, such as comparisons of popular television characters. Preview before turning students loose or simply direct them to a specific "diffen."”

5 Most Dangerous U.S. Earthquake Hot Spots Beyond California
http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/10/five-us-earthqu/
From the site:
“California isn’t the only state with a serious earthquake hazard. There are several lesser-known fault zones lurking in other parts of the country that are just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than the famed San Andreas Fault.
Some of these faults are capable of producing quakes bigger than the 1906 San Francisco quake, but because the time between major jolts is longer than in California, many people who live near these faults don’t even know they are there.” <<>>

The English is British style, so remember that “revise” on this site means the same as “review” to Americans. Teachers can register their students to follow their progress. Registration is free, but does require an email address. You may want to create your own Gmail account with up to 20 subaccounts for each student (by code name or number) within your classes. Here is a blog post that tells how.
“Data on correct and incorrect answers as well as strengths and weaknesses are kept for students. This site does include some minor advertisements. Watch out for a link to “essay paper” buried at the far bottom right on the home page: a place to purchase essays online!”

Fri., May 22, 2009 - FORVO (World Languages)
FORVO - forvo.com - Grades 2 to 12
http://forvo.com/
From TeachersFirst.com:
Forvo offers word pronunciations in a whopping 213 languages, with more words recorded every day. Besides common languages, there are a host of unusual and even rare and old languages whose words students can hear on the site: Lithuanian, Latin, Tibetan, Franco-Provencal, Walloon, and many others. Speakers of other languages may wish to contribute their own pronunciations for unusual words; all of the speakers on the site are native speakers! Words are organized by languages and also in 6 very general categories which include people, music, countries, etc. The site also includes Google Maps of the areas where the languages are spoken. Files are downloadable to mp3's and other types of recorders. But you can also listen to them directly online without downloading. Native speakers can also dispute recorded pronunciations and request for new languages to be added. There is free membership, but this is only needed if you wish to rate recordings or participate as a contributor.

Normally, I don't feature Physical Education on ClickSchooling, but this

"We have created a public interest website that focuses on keeping your kids
fit, active and healthy, which I thought may be of interest to your readers.
We don't make any profit from the site but we'd like to spread the word and
get the information out to as many people as possible."
Essentially this site archives interesting articles with tips and advice for
keeping your kids active and fit by providing exercise and nutrition ideas!
When you get to the site, you'll see instructions at the top of the screen
for how to navigate the site. Below that are some featured articles of

for 5-12 year olds, learn about fitness equipment, personal trainers, and

"Fascinating... more than any other American of his time, Cody is the one most responsible for crafting the enduring narrative of the American West." New York Post
“For most Americans in the mid 1800s, the Wild West existed only in dime novels and story papers. But for William Cody, it was very real. He roamed the plains, first tracking down deserters, and eventually taking part in direct combat with the Natives; He was tall, handsome, with brash confidence and a great deal of charisma. In short, he was the embodiment of how easterners pictured a frontier hero-struggling to bring civilization to the west.
From filmmaker Rob Rapley, Buffalo Bill draws upon rich archival materials to explore the man behind the legend, revealing the complexity of William Cody's extraordinary life. "Buffalo Bill was a phenomenon unlike anything the world had seen. He turned the story of the west into a phenomenon as well," says Rapley. "Cody blurred the line between truth and entertainment, history and myth. And he was wildly successful doing it."

[NOTE: Previously posted. - Phyllis ]
From TeachersFirst.com:
If you teach theatre, acting, or history, this site is a smorgasbord of information. The home page features "today in theatre history" and a featured topic. The index of topics shows origins of theatre, ancient and medieval theatre, and then theatre by country (American, Irish, Russian, French, etc.). Clicking on one of those takes you to a page with category choices-- Plays and Playwrights, or Actors-- and a list of links to specific articles that are academic, but interesting and very readable.
One of the nicest features on the site is the "Script Archive," which gives access to full-length plays, one-act plays, 10-minute plays, and monologues. This is a fabulous source for theatre and speech teachers alike.
Be aware: this is a commercial site, so there are links to purchase books, but it is more subtle than most sites, and all the links are freely given without a need to register. There are also advertisements, preview for appropriateness before sharing with your class, as these ads change without notice.

Hi! It's Monday, October 20, 2008 and time for Math at ClickSchooling!

ClickScholar Annette Hall, suggested this website that was created by
Michael Edlavitch, a middle school math teacher, who wrote, "I spent the
summer making a website geared directly for grades 6-8. I want students to
have a site where they can practice their math skills while still having
fun. I have personally made the games."
When you get to the site, you'll see a brief introduction and a couple of
featured games. Use the menu bar at the top of the screen to access:
* Games - Have fun honing math skills with 11 interactive games that include
Addition Eaters, Factor Feeders, Integer Tilt, Multiplication Eaters,
Division Eaters, Fraction Poker and the innovative Pimon (a combination of
Pi and Simon).
Note: There aren't instructions for how to play these games, but if you try
them, you'll intuit how to play. You're kids will probably figure it out
before you do. :)
* Tutorials - Watch amateurish YouTube videos on Base 10 math, adding and
subtracting integers, and solving integer equations featuring multiplication
and division. Essentially you view a white screen containing black text and
equations. The limited explanations and illustrations move way too fast for
a beginner to absorb - so, it may be a better resource as a brush-up tool.
Note: As always with videos on YouTube, parents should preview the videos to
determine if the surrounding content is suitable, and supervise use.
Mr. Edlavitch is eager to hear your comments and suggestions about
HoodaMath.com - just use the "Contact Us" form on the menu to reach him.

Exploring Genes & Genetic Disorders [pdf]
http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/posters/chromosome/
More and more excellent data continues to be produced by the Human Genome
Project, and a number of government organizations have created top-notch
educational resources based on this information. The Gene Gateway website
was originally produced as a companion to the Human Genome Landmarks poster
and has evolved into a "collection of guides and tutorials designed to help
students and other novice users get started with some of the resources that
make these data available to the public." Here visitors are introduced to
various Internet tools that anyone can use to investigate "genetic
disorders, chromosomes, genome maps, genes, sequence data, genetic variants,
and molecular structures." Visitors can download the Gene Gateway workbook,
which contains five activities, complete with screenshots and step-by-step
instructions "designed to introduce new users to genetic disorder and
bioinformatics resources on the Web". Moving down the homepage, visitors can
look into sections such as "Bioinformatics Tools", the "Genetic Disorder
Guide", and an outstanding "Chromosome Viewer". The viewer provides a great
backdrop for those seeking to understand the physical makeup of human
chromosomes. Also, visitors can order a free copy of the wall poster "Human
Genome Landmarks: Selected Genes, Traits, and Disorders". [KMG]

delightful website. Created as part of the Annenberg Media's educational
resource website, this site offers an eight-part professional development
workshop for use by music, theater, dance, and visual art teachers. The site
includes all eight of the one hour programs, and visitors just need to
complete a free registration form to view them in their entirety. The
programs all include demonstrations, sample activities, and other
pedagogical elements. Visitors should note that the programs include titles
like "Developing Students as Artists", "Creating Rich Learning
Environments", and "Fostering Genuine Communication". The site also includes
support materials and "Channel talk", which is the email discussion list for
this set of workshops. [KMG]

Yearbook of the United Nations [pdf]
http://unyearbook.un.org/
Since 1946, the United Nations (UN) has produced an annual work known as the
Yearbook. This volume serves as the principal reference work on the United
Nations and their various activities. Recently, the UN digitized the
Yearbooks from 1946 to 2005 and placed them on this very handy website.
Visitors to the homepage can use the drop down menu offered here to look
through any of the volumes that interest them. Within each volume, visitors
can read through chapters, which usually include sections on political and
security matters, economic and social questions, and a host of legal
questions. For those persons looking for specific topics, each volume can
be searched individually, or users may also wish to use the "Power Search"
feature to refine their search even further. Finally, a "Share" feature
allows users to share their findings via Google, Digg, Facebook, and other
popular social networking sites. [KMG]

[KMG]

CLICKSCHOOLING REVIEW:

Lufthansa: Virtual Pilot
http://www.lufthansa-usa.com/useugame2007/html/play.html
ClickSchooling subscriber Kathye Shuman of North Carolina recommended this
website that provides a fun, online game to test your knowledge of European
geography.
When you get to the site you'll see an introduction that explains how the
game is played. Essentially, you become a virtual pilot of a Lufthansa jet.
You are provided with the name of a European city and a map. In 8 seconds,
you must determine where that city is located on the map and click on the
correct destination to land your plane. The closer you click to the correct
location, the higher your score.
There are 3 rounds to the game, and each is more challenging. Once you
complete the game you can see your score. You can also click on a button to
play the game again. Each game contains new locations with a few
repetitions.
Note: You are given the option to enter your name and email address to see
how you rank in comparison to others who have played the game. I suspect
that you may receive advertising from Lufthansa if you provide your correct
email address. Entering a bogus name and email address will render the
desired results without subjecting yourself to spam.
This is a fun way to test your knowledge of European geography. :)

“What determines whether a fossil will be created for others to find? This site offers information that fits into your science curriculum at multiple levels, depending on whether students work on their own or as a teacher-centered activity. Use these activities to explore factors in the creation and the finding of fossils. For example, in "Burying Bodies," choose the location in the picture where the animal is found and watch biological and natural events determine whether a fossil will be created. Watch the flash animation and read the written narration as well. Other activities include "Making Fossils," "Skeleton Jigsaws," "Footprints," and "Camouflage." Other links of fantastic information that students often ask questions about can be found within the site.”

Age Range: 9 and up (younger children may enjoy aspects of this site with
adult help)
ClickSchooler Nancy Hogan recommended this website that offers a fun, free
way to learn about Greek mythology! Learn about the gods, creatures, and
heroes from ancient Greece that equip your kids to understand vocabulary and
references in literature, poetry, the newspaper, blogs, and all forms of
communication and entertainment. Consider these basic examples provided at
the website:
* In tribute to Hercules and his Labors, a huge or heroic task is said to
Herculean.
* The Midas touch, or the gift of profiting from whatever one undertakes, is
named for a legendary king of Phrygia.
* A book of maps gets its name from Atlas, the Titan who supported the
heavens on his shoulders.
You'll find many more examples in the "Teachers" section of the website that
you can access from the home/landing page. (It also includes free
suggestions for activities and lesson plans designed to build skills in
creative writing, vocabulary development, and art appreciation.)
When you get to the site you'll see a main menu that includes:
* Gods - Learn about 12 deities that dwelt on Mount Olympus through engaging
text and colorful graphics.
* Heroes - Read the comic-book-style biographies of Jason, Hercules,
Bellerophon, Theseus, Odysseus and Perseus - in English or Latin! Print them
out to read offline too!
* Today - Find out how the Greek myths are relevant today.
* Encyclopedia - Get definitions and descriptions of various characters,
places, and events in Greek mythology.
You'll also find links to other websites with more in-depth information
about Greek mythology.
This website is actually a commercial site that offers a CD-ROM of a Greek
Mythology game for sale. However, that is one small aspect of this
educational site. The vast majority of the content is absolutely free.

“When a computer is lost or disposed of, active and discarded data typically remains stored on its hard disk drive. Even if users “delete” all their files, they can be recovered from “recycling” folders or by special utility programs such as Norton Unerase.”
“If data is not erased beyond recovery, data on disk drives that leave the physical control of owners can and often does fall into the hands of others. Data can be recovered with little effort, from discarded, warranty repaired, or resold disk drives. Many reports have been written on data recovered from discarded disk drives.2,3 Each year hundreds of thousands of hard disk drives are retired. Some of these hard disk drives find their way back into the market and their data can be recovered unless it is erased securely.” <<>>

“At eight o'clock on Sunday evening, October 16, 1859, abolitionist John Brown led a party of twenty-one men into the town of Harpers Ferry, Virginia, where they captured the lone night watchman and cut the town's telegraph lines. Encountering no resistance, Brown's men seized the federal arsenal, an armory, and a rifle works. Brown then sent out several detachments to round up hostages and liberate slaves.
“His plan soon went awry. As news of the raid spread, angry townspeople and local militia companies cut off Brown's escape routes and trapped his men in the armory. Two days later, U.S. Marines commanded by Colonel Robert E. Lee arrived. Brown and his men took refuge in a fire engine house. Lee's marines stormed the engine house and rammed down its doors. Five of Brown's party escaped, ten were killed, and seven, including Brown himself, were taken prisoner. A week later, Brown was put on trial in a Virginia court, even though his attack had occurred on federal property. He was found guilty of treason, conspiracy, and murder, and was sentenced to die on the gallows. The trial's high point came at the very end when Brown was allowed to make a five-minute speech, in which he defended his actions as righteous and just, convincing many Northerners that this grizzled man of fifty-nine was not an extremist but a martyr to the cause of freedom. Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859 and his body buried on his family farm at North Elba, New York.”

Wed., May 6, 2009 - Microdocs: The Short Attention Span Science Theater on Ecological Sustainability
--------Forwarded Message--------
Hi! It's Tuesday, October 14, 2008 and time for Science at ClickSchooling!
Recommended Website:
Microdocs: The Short Attention Span Science Theater on Ecological
Sustainability
http://www.stanford.edu/group/microdocs/index.html
Age Range: 10-18 (Grades 5-12)
This website, courtesy of Stanford University, offers engaging 2-4 minute
videos called "microdocs." Each microdoc focuses on one aspect of
environmental sustainability.
MaryAnna Cashmore recommended the site and wrote, "This website is geared
toward today's students, who have increasingly shorter attention spans. It
was created with the hope that the upcoming generation will care about and
preserve our environment after gaining an appreciation for its beauty."
When you get to the website you'll see an introduction and the featured
microdoc. Use the menu bar at the very top of the screen to read the "About
Us" section that helps to explain the purpose of this site and how best to
navigate it.
Then, to view the various microdocs archived here, click on each of the four
tabs on the menu that include:
* Elements of Sustainability - This section defines sustainability and
explores (through microdoc videos) the 4 elements that influence and shape
ecosystems: Productivity, Diversity, Disturbance, and Resilience.
* Sustainability on Coral Reefs - Watch a microdoc video that explains the
importance of coral reefs, the human impacts that threaten their
productivity, and how to protect this important habitat.
* Species on Coral Reefs - This microdoc allows you to virtually explore a
coral reef in Micronesia and explains that coral reefs are home to 1/4 of
all marine species providing important shelter, food and other resources not
only to the critters that inhabit them, but to millions of people as well.
* Solutions Around the World - Find out the benefits of protecting coral
reef ecosystems.
These microdocs help students (with or without short attention spans)
understand what happens when ecological balance is changed. While the same
4 elements (productivity, diversity, disturbance, and resilience) affect all
ecosystems - coral reefs were chosen as an example because they are visually
beautiful and severely threatened. If you watch these microdocs you'll
understand how altering ecosystems impacts our environment.

MiBAC: Music Theory

Age Range: 7 and up (approximately, non-readers will need assistance)
ClickScholar MaryAnna Cashmore suggested this commercial website where you
can access the basic facts of music theory for FREE. Learn or brush up on
the names of music staffs, lines and spaces, notes, key signatures, major
and minor scales, time signatures and more. The site is divided into two
helpful sections that include Music Theory I and Music Theory II.
When you get to the site, you will land on the first page of "Music Theory
I." You'll see a brief description of one topic on music theory. Look at
the menu on the left side of the screen to access all of the material in
this category from learning the music alphabet to identifying keyboard keys,
to learning about the "Circle of Fifths."
When you are through exploring that section click on "Music Theory II" on
the menu to access the free information on Thirds, Root Positions, Arpeggio,
Triads, and more.
This site is really a glossary of music terminology - and the simple
definitions and explanations make it easy to understand. There are no bells
and whistles and no drills - just bare bones basic music facts.

this goal, they have created a fine set of online resources for use by their
own students and members of the web-browsing public. This particular set
includes a long list of resources created by staff members at Amherst and at
other institutions. These resources are divided into thematic headings such
as "Preparing to Write", "Thesis and Argument", "Clarity and Grace", and
"Using Sources". On the left hand side of the page, users can view the same
list and also learn more about the writing center at Amherst and their work.
Overall, it's a fine set of resources, and one that college students in
particular will find useful, especially as they approach a paper deadline.

Pueblo, USA: How Latino Immigration is Changing America [Real Player]
http://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/immigration/
Latino immigration continues to transform the United States in many ways,
and it isn't just in the Southwest or California that these changes are
occurring. Siler City, North Carolina and Minneapolis, Minnesota are just
two of the seemingly unlikely places where one can glimpse this
transformation to the American landscape. This offering from the American
RadioWorks organization takes a heartfelt and investigative look into the
ways in which Latino immigration is remaking the country. The documentary
is divided into two sections: "Precarious Prosperity" and "Nuevo South". In
the first, visitors will hear about the broader transformations wrought by
Latino immigration across the country, and in the second, visitors can
listen to the ways in which this process is playing out in the small town of
Siler City. On the site visitors can also read about profiles of immigrants
attempting to become legal residents of the US and the ways in which Latinos
breathe new life into long neglected urban communities. Finally, visitors
can also download the entire program and read the transcript here as well.

transformation to the American landscape.

Fri., May 1, 2009 - Liquid Sculpture
----------Forwarded Message--------
Site of the Day for Thursday, October 9, 2008
Liquid Sculpture
http://www.liquidsculpture.com/
http://www.liquidsculpture.com/fine_art/index.htm
Today's site, from Portland, Oregon photographer Martin Waugh, presents the
visually stunning images of fluids captured in motion. Gentle Subscribers will
discover an arresting gallery of pictures where art soars in collaboration with
technique.
"What you see on this site are high-resolution photographs of liquids in motion,
captured with high-speed flash photography. ... the smooth and effortless curves of
liquid, eliciting a childlike sense of fun and whimsy. ... free-flowing photography
evokes images from rolling, rhythmic oceans to drops of water falling upon a lake,
taking one on a spiritual journey bounded only by imagination. ... We hope you
enjoy the fun, whimsy and wonder of these selected works from Martin Waugh. Please
take a moment and see where your imagination takes you." - from the website
The exhibit presents a hundred spectacular images arranged either by title or by
"serendipity". Created by altering such aspects as the size, color, speed,
viscosity, and surface tension of fluids, the images are captured using a digital
camera and flash. Visitors can opt for a nicely designed slideshow to view the
photos or can simply click on an image at random. Hovering over most of the images
with a mouse reveals a small defined rectangle, which when clicked, zooms in to
expand a particular section of the photo. Additional details about the
photographer, his work and notes on the history of high speed photography are also
available.
Glide over to the exhibit for an intriguing look at these singular images at:

METEOROLOGY, NASA (Arlene S. Levine) An Educator's Resource for Inquiry-Based Learning for Grades 5-9 is written as a supplement to existing Earth and space science curricula for grades 5-9. The guide may be used in both formal and informal educational settings as well as at home. It should be used in conjunction with lectures, discussions, textbooks and other teaching material. This guide is not intended to be a complete course in meteorology; rather, its function is to assist educators in instilling excitement in learning about meteorology by permitting the learner to take increasing responsibility for his/her learning. The learner should experience "how we arrive at what we know," rather than memorizing what we know. This publication was developed to enhance the understanding of inquiry-based learning from the educator/teacher¹s perspective as well as from the learner¹s perspective. Inquiry-based learning has many levels. There are four levels of inquiry defined in this publication, confirmation-verification, structured inquiry, guided inquiry and open inquiry. The levels will be further defined and explained in the introductory chapter. The resource is free and is on-line to down-load.

WORLD WAR II: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Web site Launches Educator Resources
http://www.pbs.org/behindcloseddoors/
In secret meetings held throughout the duration of World War II, Joseph Stalin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill sparred and negotiated for the political and economic interests of their nations -- making deals that often had more to do with expediency than right or wrong. In the PBS special WORLD WAR II: BEHIND CLOSED DOORS (airing in May), historian and filmmaker Laurence Rees tells the unknown story of Stalin's backroom dealings -- first with the Nazis and then with Roosevelt and Churchill. The program's companion Web site http://www.pbs.org/behindcloseddoors/ includes a host of additional educational resources including lesson plans, activities, more than 30 articles, an essay by a famed historian, interactive maps, primary sources, witness testimonies, archival film footage, video clips from the series itself, and photographs.

May Media Infusion: The IslandWood 2.0 Team
In the May Media Infusion, representatives from IslandWood, a 250-acre residential environmental education center that serves nearly 4,000 students each year, discuss environmental education, place-based learning and the use of technology.
"We're often asked, "Why would an outdoor education center use screen-based tools to connect kids with nature?," writes the IslandWood team. "Yes, it's a bit counterintuitive, but we've identified a few key reasons why we, and classroom teachers, should actually use them more."
The IslandWood team offers strategies to help connect students to their own neighborhood environment and community by using PBS resources such as the newly launched companion Web site THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA, NOVA and more.
PBS Teachers invites educators to visit Media Infusion in May and ask questions, comment on IslandWood's suggestions or offer some of their own. http://www.pbs.org/teachers/mediainfusion/
